Project Description

January 13, 2018

As we continue to work our way through the results of the parish survey, this week I’ll give you a summary of your feedback on the preaching at Mass.  Here’s how you responded to the preaching section of the survey.  (Answers were on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being Strongly Disagree and 5 being Strongly Agree.)

I can hear the homilies clearly:  4.5

The homilies are usually an appropriate length (not too long, not too short):  4.2

The homilies hold my attention:  4.1

The homilies are well prepared and are delivered well:  4.3

I can usually understand the main points of the homily:  4.3

I can often remember the main point of the homily after Mass is done:  4.0

The preaching at Christ the King helps me to understand the Scripture better:  4.3

The preaching at Christ the King helps me deepen my relationship with Jesus:  4.2

The preaching at Christ the King gives me insights I can apply to my everyday life:  4.2

I enjoy the preaching at Christ the King:  4.3

I think I can speak for the other priests when I say how valuable it was to read your comments on our preaching.  After all, preaching is only effective if it helps the listener break open the Scriptures and come to a deeper relationship with Christ.  Both the positive and the negative comments gave us a much better idea of how well this is/isn’t happening right now.  Here are the most common comments that were written about preaching in the survey:

Favorable comments about preaching (131)

Homilies are too long (29; there was a wide range of opinions as to what the appropriate homily length should be, ranging from 5 to 10 minutes)

Positive comments about a particular homilist (20)

Negative comments about a particular homilist (20)

Homilies do not relate to everyday life (12)

Homilies lack substance (12)

Complaints about including political issues in homilies (7)

Mixed reviews overall (5)

Thanks again for this feedback!
