Project Description

January 7, 2018

Well, we’ve compiled the results of the parish survey, and I expect to have the full report up on the web site in the next few weeks.  (I’ll put a note in my column when it’s available for you to view.)  The full report will be pretty long (although many of those pages are filled with graphs, which make it a quick read), so today I’ll begin the first of several columns which summarize the key areas of the survey.  Today’s column will give you the feedback on liturgy in general.

Here is a summary of the answers you gave to questions about the celebration of the Mass at Christ the King.  (Answers were on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being Strongly Disagree and 5 being Strongly Agree.)  I always like having good data about what people think, so I hope you find this as interesting as I do!

  • I enjoy coming to Mass at Christ the King: 3
  • The Mass is celebrated reverently at Christ the King: 5
  • The weekend Mass times are convenient for me: 3
  • I am able to participate fully in Mass: 4
  • The priests do a good job of leading us reverently in prayer: 6
  • Our lay ministers (Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Altar Servers) do an effective job in their ministries: 4
  • I understand what each part of the Mass means: 3
  • I am able to see and hear what is happening at Mass: 5
  • The overall length of the Mass is appropriate: 3
  • Mass flows smoothly (not too rushed but not dragging): 1
  • Extra rites performed during the Mass (baptisms, anniversary blessings, anointings, etc.) are appropriate to the liturgy and are explained well so that I can follow what is going on: 2
  • The announcements at the end of Mass are appropriate and helpful: 3

In general people indicated that they were satisfied with how we celebrate Mass, but of course there’s always room for improvement.  The most common comment that was made about how we celebrate Mass (excluding music and preaching, which are covered in a separate section) was that the purification of the vessels after Communion is too slow and causes Mass to drag.  There were a few other observations that came up with some frequency in this section (in order of how many people made this comment):

  • Some people prefer that baptisms take place outside of Sunday Mass.
  • Several people were glad that the bells have returned at the consecration.
  • Some people expressed a desire for different Mass times, particularly for a Sunday evening Mass.
  • Some people commented on the amount of noise in the church before and after Mass.
  • People expressed appreciation for Children’s Liturgy of the Word.
  • People expressed disappointment with congregational reverence, or the attire worn at Mass, including by liturgical ministers; and with children’s behavioral issues at Mass.
  • People asked that parts of the Mass be explained in some way so they could better understand the Mass.
  • People requested additional confession times.
  • People complimented our ushers for their hospitality.

This is just a summary of what you said.  How we act upon these comments will be a much longer-term process, but I’ll keep you informed as we incorporate your feedback into our strategic plan.
