Project Description

Today we will celebrate our annual Mission Appeal, which will be preached by Fr. Patrick Gaffney, CSC.  Fr. Pat is a Holy Cross priest who had taught in the Anthropology Department at Notre Dame before taking a position with the newly-formed Notre Dame University of Bangladesh.  (He also served as a deacon here at Christ the King many years ago.)  Fr. Pat will be with us at all of our Masses this weekend, and we are delighted to have him.

The Mission Appeal gives us a great opportunity to remember the universal nature of our Church.  Most of the time, we tend to be preoccupied with local and immediate concerns: what’s going on in our homes, parishes and neighborhoods, as well as our day-to-day obligations.  The Mission Appeal gives us a moment to remember that, as Catholic Christians, we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves.  Indeed, we are part of a universal Church.  Even though we come from different cultures, have different backgrounds and observe different customs, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.  The more exposure we get to the Church in other parts of the world, the more we realize that what we have in common is stronger than our differences.

We’re especially grateful that this year’s Mission Appeal will directly benefit the work of Holy Cross in the developing world.  All money donated to the appeal will go to the Holy Cross Mission Center, which is instrumental in funding the many of our works in the developing world.  In last week’s column Fr. Mike wrote about our sister parish, Corpus Christi Parish in Jalchatra, Bangladesh.  This parish is one of many apostolates throughout the world founded and staffed by Holy Cross.  Foreign missions have always been a part of our DNA ever since we were officially founded in 1838.  Within just a couple of years, our founder Blessed Basil Moreau began sending missionaries wherever they were needed.  In fact, it was that missionary spirit that led him to send Fr. Sorin and six religious brothers to Indiana, which was considered harsh missionary territory in those days!

Today, Holy Cross serves in territories all over the world.  In the Americas, we serve in Canada, Mexico, Haiti, Peru, Chile and Brazil.  In Europe we are present in France and Ireland.  In Asia, we serve in India and Bangladesh.  In Africa, we serve in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.  Each one of these missions faces a lot of unique challenges, but each one of them is also filled with inspiring stories of the faith in action.  Learning about the missions often helps us to appreciate that those who are materially poor are often rich in faith, and they have a lot to teach us.  I thank you in advance for your generous support of the Mission Appeal and for your warm welcome for Fr. Pat.
