“To Sing is to Pray Twice”

All of the musical ministries at Christ the King are dedicated to a high standard of excellence in liturgical music. They seek to inspire and lead the assembly in a wide variety of hymns, songs, and chants. All who are interested in sharing their musical gifts are welcome! There is a place for everyone. Please do not hesitate to contact Jessica Bush, the Director of Music and Liturgy, with questions.

The Adult Liturgical Choir is heard at 8:45 and 10:30 Sunday Masses each week during the choir season (After Labor Day through Christmas/Epiphany, and February through Easter/Corpus Christi).  Some members sing at both masses, while others sing for one mass.  The choir sings a wide variety of liturgical music, including chant, polyphony, hymnody, and contemporary worship, all in a variety of arrangements.  The choir is made up of parishioners of all musical abilities, and we practice weekly skills like reading music and vocal/choral technique.  All members of the parish that have the desire to raise their voices in song and learn a variety of liturgical music are welcome to join.  This is truly a fast-growing, family-like ministry that has a lot of fun and grows close through singing and growing together, all while providing exceptional music for Sunday liturgies, special Solemnities and Feasts, and other special liturgies and prayer events.
The cantors of Christ the King are strong leaders, and exceptional musicians. They must be able to lead the congregation in song as well as demonstrate a rounded knowledge of their faith. This allows them to truly add meaning to the words they sing and inspire the assembled to join them in the wonderful gift of sung prayer. They fulfill an important role during the summer, as well as choir season. If you have the desire to become a cantor, please contact the Director of Music and Liturgy.
The school’s liturgical choir provides music for the 1:45pm school Mass during the week, as well as other special liturgies for the parish when called upon. We sing standard hymnody, chants, and contemporary worship songs, and some of our students also play instruments. The choir is composed of Christ the King students from fourth through eighth grade. Under the direction of the Director of Liturgy and Music, students are called to foster their musical gifts, as well as their Catholic faith. Meeting times for the choir are set for Tuesday afternoons from 3 – 4:30 PM, where we rehearse hymns for the coming School Mass, play choir games, have a snack, and learn extra music for other events throughout the year.  Members who are interested in cantoring must audition and practice extra times per week with the Music Director to prepare.  Students cantor the School Mass in pairs.
The Bible tells us to praise the Lord on the harp, trumpet, tambourine, and everything that hath breath! We welcome instrumentalists especially for special liturgies, prayer evenings, retreats, feasts and solemnities, and even on some Sunday masses. There is a place for all instruments, string, woodwind, brass, and percussion.  Please contact the Director of Music and Liturgy if you play an instrument and are interested in sharing your talents. For parishioners with time limitations, they may be called upon only for special liturgies. All of these parishioners play an “instrumental” role in creating an extraordinary liturgy.
Composed primarily of adult choir members, the seasonal choir comes together during the pre-Christmas and pre-Easter seasons to provide music and sung prayer for these special times of the church year.  They are also welcome to join for events such as Taize and evening prayer. This choir is open to parishioners who may not have time for a “full-time” choir season commitment, but still wish to fulfill a musical role during these special times of year.  Seasonal choir members are typically experienced singers who are comfortable reading and learning music quickly, as they come to fewer rehearsals.  Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 PMbeginning in late fall, and extra rehearsals are often scheduled as the choir requires it. Announcements for this choir can be found in the bulletin. Please contact the Director of Music and Liturgy with any questions
