For most of my life I have been a parishioner at Christ the King Parish. I attended Sunday School (CCD) here at Christ the King, received my First Communion and Confirmation here. I was involved in the Youth Ministry Program (The New Creation), and almost 35 years ago, was married to my wonderful husband in this place that I call home. For over 25 years, I have been involved with the Religious Education Program as a catechist and Coordinator, a ministry that is very close to my heart.
Today at the 8:45am Mass, we joyfully commission ten parishioners as catechists in the Religious Education Program. These wonderful people have dedicated themselves to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to the students in our parish that attend public schools and are home schooled. All of our Catechists have been involved in the Religious Education Program for over 5 years, and we have two catechists that have been involved in the program for more than 30 years! Five of our Catechists have graduated from the diocesan two year Education for Ministry Program.
Our Catechists are entrusted with the important role of formally presenting the story of faith to our young people in a way that enables them to see and experience faith as a “living reality.” They teach the doctrines and practices, while exploring the four pillars of the Catholic faith: Creed, Sacraments, Morality and Prayer on an age appropriate level.
We have many opportunities for prayer on Sunday mornings including a Living Rosary and Stations of the Cross. We also encourage service and stewardship through support of our food pantry and the Women’s Care Center.
Religious Education classes begin September 22nd. If your child was 4 years old by July 1st, or is in grades Pre-K through 8th grade at a non-parochial school, please come join us! Classes meet from 8:45 AM – 10:15 AM in the school building. Call Linda during office hours in the rectory at 272-3113 for a registration form, or come to the REP Office on Sunday, September 22nd at 8:30am to register.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J (now Pope Francis) wrote this to his catechists in Buenos Aires in August of 2012:
While thanking you from my heart for all that you do as a catechist, for your time and your dedication, I ask the Lord to give you an open mind, so as to recreate dialogue and encounter among those whom God entrusts to you, and a believing heart so as to follow, exclaiming that He is alive and loves us as no one else does. I have a picture of Mary Help of Christians that says, “You who believed, help me!” May she help us to follow by being faithful to the Lord’s call….
Today we echo this call and thank our Catechists for their faith filled ministry!
