Deacon Gil is away this weekend on his pre-ordination retreat, and that gives me the perfect opportunity to make a plug for his upcoming ordination to the priesthood! All of you are invited to attend:
- Deacon Gil’s Ordination to the Priesthood on Saturday April 18, 2020 at 2:00pm at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus (with a reception to follow in the Main Building)
- Fr. Gil’s first Mass, celebrated right here at Christ the King on Sunday April 19, 2020 at 12:15pm (with a reception to follow in the church basement)
If you’ve never been to an ordination Mass before, it’s a pretty incredible liturgy, as Bishop Rhoades will use the ancient symbol of the laying on of hands to ordain Deacon Gil and his three classmates. I won’t give away too many of the details here, but if you talk to any parishioners who have witnessed an ordination Mass, I’m positive they will tell you it’s a very moving experience.
I know that we all feel very blessed by Deacon Gil’s presence. I also know he feels blessed to be at Christ the King. We have seen a steady stream of deacons at Christ the King over the years (including myself), and that’s a real testament to all of you. Simply put, it means that the superiors in Holy Cross recognize that this is a great parish for someone to learn how to be a priest, and that is largely due to our parishioners. Never underestimate your role in forming new priests into good and holy priests; you certainly did that for me!
I hope you’re able to join us for these beautiful Masses, so mark your calendars!
