A Parish of Prayer and Worship
“‘Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.’ But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or ‘out of the depths’ of a humble and contrite heart? He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer. Only when we humbly acknowledge that ‘we do not know how to pray as we ought,’ are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer.” (CCC #2259)
St. Thérèse of Lisieux calls prayer a “surge of the heart” and a “simple look turned toward heaven.” We are each called to an intimate interior relationship with God through prayer, which should then stir us to prayer in the context of community with our brothers and sisters through acts of public praise and worship. Christ the King strives to build a family of faith rooted in prayer.
- Eucharistic Adoration is offered each Friday morning, with a Forty-Hour Devotion held each year leading up to our parish feast day.
- We pray for both the living and the dead at every celebration of the Eucharist, and in a particular way we honor the corporal work of mercy to bury the dead through funeral Masses and committals.
- Traditional devotional prayers, such as the Rosary and Stations of the Cross, connect us with generations of Catholics who have prayed these same devotions.
- Traditional Catholic blessings, such as the blessing of homes for Epiphany, the blessing of throats on the feast of St. Blaise, and the blessing of animals on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, enfold us within the sanctifying work of God.
- Seasonal gatherings during Advent and Lent, such as for parish penance services or Taizé prayer, enhance the spiritual well-being of our community.
- Our parish prayer line and book of intentions regularly include those from our community in need of special intercession.
